Luca Raniero was Sal’s great grandfather, and I prayed to keep that little tidbit to myself.

I was an accident—an affair, a mistake.

One crazy ass bitch and a zealot of a man hooked up and made me.

I have no problem owning my legacy or who I am, but Stormy is precious and young. And these type of things scare most girls faster than a mouse scurrying across the kitchen floor. She’ll hop in a chair, screaming and crying for someone—anyone else to save her—but not me.

Thankfully, she isn’t most girls.

But a shit-kicking, straight from the hip shooter, with no governor to control her speed. I called her a firecracker and that is exactly what she is—beautiful and explosive. I’d light her fuse just to be enamored by her shower of colors in the dark.

Some girls aren’t meant for the light of day, their beauty rivaled amongst sleeping stars and crescent moons. She’s a vampire, a seductress, and a rapacious stalker, who functions better in the night than under any ray of sunshine.

She’s just my type.

And that alone scares the hell out of me.

I shift my gaze to Iris. “Does Sal know you’re out prowling the streets of Sugargrove at midnight?”

“Mr. Bianchi, do not start with me. I do not need my husband’s permission to leave the homestead,” she scolds, in her typical irreverent manner. She pulls back the robe, showing off the gun strapped to her thigh. “That’s not all I’ve got. But you need to calm down. Stormy isn’t as gullible or as needy as you think. She’s capable or I wouldn’t have requested her talents.”

It’s not her I am worried about—it’s you.

“… You ready, princess?” Deacon asks from the staircase. “I copied all the documents Sal requested for the Juliet expansion project.”

“Yes,” Iris replies with a wink and lifts her hand like she’s holding a tray of beer mugs. “As you can see, I have a handy chauffeur.”

“Handy with a crowbar,” I snort and laugh. “You’re in good company.”

“I’m in excellent care and might I remind you, my husband is Interim Director of Juliet.”

The castle is in capricious hands.

“I’m well aware of what Sal is doing,” I state, crossing my arms over my chest. “Stay out of trouble.”

“You need to stop worrying so much about this young lady,” Iris confidently remarks. “She isn’t as naive as you want to believe.”

“You have your pit bull,” I point out, waving toward Deacon and then at Stormy. “And she has me.”

“Touché.”

She kisses Stormy with way too much tongue to be considered friendly acquaintance and pecks me on the cheek before departing. Deacon waves and takes her hand as they leave.

Feeling displaced, I mutter to Stormy, “You could’ve asked me.”

“You didn’t want to discuss it on the bench.”

“I would’ve for you,” I reply, laying my hand on hers. “It’s not easy to admit that my birthmother—Viola Bianchi—didn’t want me and my biological father—Demetrios Cristos—was a heinous human capable of unthinkable atrocities, but I would’ve told you whatever you wanted to know.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispers, glancing down.
